Ava's Couture Kids Vanity Fair Style Portrait

Couture Kids Portraits

Oh, how I love this child... even though she doesn't like to patiently sit and play dress up with me in the studio like she used to, and even if she decides to throw a tantrum every once in a while... She ends up amazing me through my lens. Every. Time. This young lady is a timeless classic, and as Master Will Shakespeare once said:

And though she be but little, she is fierce

Can we talk for a minute? The importance of portraits...

Last year I was chosen to do the school portraits of a very special place,  Wings Learning Center! My really good friend and lighting mentor, Joerg Lehmann, had previously held the position, and told me he even strongly considered flying in from Australia to continue this project, but referred them to me instead. The staff and students here are some amazing people... I am so happy to have been invited back! Wings has programs for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder from age 5 to age 22. Some students are non-verbal, but many also have difficulty connecting with a camera or another person.

My assistant Vicki, who is a para-aid as well as a photographer, and I were employing all our skills to connect and capture portraits. We jumped around, sang, sat quietly, whatever they needed to share a bit of a glimpse into their personality. This particular guy really touched my heart. Ryan sat for me last year, and I was happy to see him a year older! Several frames in, we were having a tough time getting a shot. I remembered that his teacher had said something to him about it being picture day so we can get a photo for mom... I said, "Let's smile for mom! I love you mom!" and to my delight, he said, "I love you mom!" and gave me this smile. I had all the feels... almost cried right there and then. Many high fives were exchanged, and his smile is imprinted in my heart.

Capturing this image with this story for his family fills me with joy. The power of a printed portrait takes us to another place. People often tell me that their kids won't cooperate in a portrait session, but I can get them to pay attention, smile and show their personality more times than not! I connect on the universal language of love and respect, with a dash of fun and curiosity...

Clients for LIFE... Celebrating the Doria Family!

One of the greatest joys I have is staying connected with my sweet clients over the years! Avigail and Clarence have had me capture their engagement, their wedding, their pregnancy and  first child, AJ, and now I had the pleasure of seeing them again as their family grows with a baby girl due in early December!! Photographing them again was awesome, and it was like no time had gone by at all... well, except for their big boy AJ who is now 8! Here is an image of him as a baby from my old studio in San Carlos, and here is beautiful mama Avi dancing in the park! Love you guys!! Can't wait to meet the little miss when she arrives!

Gratitude for all my mentors... especially this woman, Sue Bryce

The Portrait Masters Conference 2017, Miramontes Spa & Resort, Palm Springs

I have just returned from an incredible and intimate conference of The Portrait Masters, hosted by my mentor, Sue Bryce. Ideas, emotions, words, to do lists, love, strength and so many other things are swirling through my brain as I stand on the brink of perhaps the most exciting time of my almost 20 year career as a professional photographer... The Masters taught me so much, including the fact that it is our legacy to pass on this great power we possess in being able to show our subjects their strength, vulnerability and human beauty of spirit with our portraits. I will be announcing some huge news in the upcoming week, and I can't wait to celebrate with all of you! Sue, my mentor, has this poem on a huge mirror in her studio, and it has spoken to my heart ever since I first heard Sue recite it in her early teachings... Let this feast begin... Stay tuned for more details...

with love,

Kim

Love After Love - Poem by Derek Walcott

The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other's welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.

You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

One of the prettiest flowers in the garden - Baby's first year!

Baby's First Year of Portraits

Everyone who knows me, knows I love babies. Josh tells me I am crazy for them, and he is right! I did photograph him often during his first year, but nothing compares to the time I have spent photographing Ava in my studio. She is the princess of so many of Lori's friends dreams. I am sure several of us would have given her a pony at the baby shower if we could have... (and a Cinderella pumpkin coach for them to pull her around in style!) Anyway, her birthday approaches...

She is such a happy child who loves music, her brothers, and especially her mama. I am so lucky to be her "Auntie Kim!" Lori makes the most adorable outfits for her, and I cherish our time in the studio! What's going to happen when she starts walking??? Thanks Lori (and the rest of the family!) for sharing your princess with us all!

Perfect Family Portraits - Burlingame

It's such an honor to know people from their wedding day on through to the family that grows from that love! Krista and Brett were married at one of my favorite places... Nestldown in Los Gatos. I love it so much that if I had known about it before I was a wedding photographer, and before Ray and I got married, I probably would have chosen it for my own wedding. Such a beautiful couple, and an amazing day, and now fast-forward a few years and they have returned to the SF Bay area to live! And they even had a sweet little Californian born at the hospital down the street! So wonderful to see you all last weekend, and get to meet your sweet children! Welcome (back) to California, and I hope to see you more often!

All this sweetness... Welcome to the world little Willa!

The highest form of compliment!! My youngest daughter is getting married...

And when it came time to book a photographer, of course, all I could think of was you! Warms my heart to know how many referrals I gratefully receive from my dearest clients! I remember Susan's older daughter, Kimberly's wedding like it was yesterday... She and Derek got married at Ramekins in Sonoma. That's where Ray and I got married... It was a little chilly that day, and sprinkles fell off and on, and it was a bit cloudy. Then, during the ceremony at a pivotal moment, the sun shined through... We all cried joyful tears! So excited to photograph another Hanson wedding in Napa next year! Feels like family...

Coach Kelly Scott of Empower Fit

One of the biggest buzzwords of the new year is branding! Communicating who you are, what you do, and what your customer will experience is a message you have to get across immediately in these web and channel surfing times! You know that old saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words...?" Well, that's where I can help! My client (who has since become a cherished friend as well!) is launching her new fitness brand, and @coachkellyscott came to me for photos that show how she can help busy professionals make time and space for fitness and good nutrition in their lives. Kelly teaches bootcamps in the real world using some of the most beautiful park locations in the Bay Area to keep her campers challenged! We met up on a rainy turned sunny Saturday, and created images and a promo video to catch a glimpse of Kelly in her element training, at home with her husband Kevin and their dog, Bodie, and ready to celebrate her 40th birthday! My amazing hair and make up artist, Heather Sanderson, (@hairby_heather_a) styled Kelly from fresh and fit, to night time glam, and the weather cooperated perfectly, except for a little chill... Here's a sneak peek! Check back soon for the entire gallery and video!
