What does your headshot say about YOU? Branding for success!

Since moving in to my new studio in Blush Salon, Downtown Grass Valley, I have really enjoyed working along side the team of amazing stylists I share space with! I have done promotional photos and styled shoots for the salon for 6 years now, and love them like family! They are all so talented. April Cose, the owner, has added some really nice new touches to the salon look, and we just did our annual headshot session in my studio! Heather Sanderson, my hair and make up artist for client shoots, has assisted me on several shoots and weddings, so after April doing my hair, and Heather doing my makeup, I stepped out of the shadows and in front of the camera. Heather did a magnificent job connecting with me through the camera as well, and now I get share a brand new headshot!! So fun!

Can we talk for a minute? The importance of portraits...

Last year I was chosen to do the school portraits of a very special place,  Wings Learning Center! My really good friend and lighting mentor, Joerg Lehmann, had previously held the position, and told me he even strongly considered flying in from Australia to continue this project, but referred them to me instead. The staff and students here are some amazing people... I am so happy to have been invited back! Wings has programs for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder from age 5 to age 22. Some students are non-verbal, but many also have difficulty connecting with a camera or another person.

My assistant Vicki, who is a para-aid as well as a photographer, and I were employing all our skills to connect and capture portraits. We jumped around, sang, sat quietly, whatever they needed to share a bit of a glimpse into their personality. This particular guy really touched my heart. Ryan sat for me last year, and I was happy to see him a year older! Several frames in, we were having a tough time getting a shot. I remembered that his teacher had said something to him about it being picture day so we can get a photo for mom... I said, "Let's smile for mom! I love you mom!" and to my delight, he said, "I love you mom!" and gave me this smile. I had all the feels... almost cried right there and then. Many high fives were exchanged, and his smile is imprinted in my heart.

Capturing this image with this story for his family fills me with joy. The power of a printed portrait takes us to another place. People often tell me that their kids won't cooperate in a portrait session, but I can get them to pay attention, smile and show their personality more times than not! I connect on the universal language of love and respect, with a dash of fun and curiosity...

Gratitude for all my mentors... especially this woman, Sue Bryce

The Portrait Masters Conference 2017, Miramontes Spa & Resort, Palm Springs

I have just returned from an incredible and intimate conference of The Portrait Masters, hosted by my mentor, Sue Bryce. Ideas, emotions, words, to do lists, love, strength and so many other things are swirling through my brain as I stand on the brink of perhaps the most exciting time of my almost 20 year career as a professional photographer... The Masters taught me so much, including the fact that it is our legacy to pass on this great power we possess in being able to show our subjects their strength, vulnerability and human beauty of spirit with our portraits. I will be announcing some huge news in the upcoming week, and I can't wait to celebrate with all of you! Sue, my mentor, has this poem on a huge mirror in her studio, and it has spoken to my heart ever since I first heard Sue recite it in her early teachings... Let this feast begin... Stay tuned for more details...

with love,

Kim

Love After Love - Poem by Derek Walcott

The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other's welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.

You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

One of the prettiest flowers in the garden - Baby's first year!

Baby's First Year of Portraits

Everyone who knows me, knows I love babies. Josh tells me I am crazy for them, and he is right! I did photograph him often during his first year, but nothing compares to the time I have spent photographing Ava in my studio. She is the princess of so many of Lori's friends dreams. I am sure several of us would have given her a pony at the baby shower if we could have... (and a Cinderella pumpkin coach for them to pull her around in style!) Anyway, her birthday approaches...

She is such a happy child who loves music, her brothers, and especially her mama. I am so lucky to be her "Auntie Kim!" Lori makes the most adorable outfits for her, and I cherish our time in the studio! What's going to happen when she starts walking??? Thanks Lori (and the rest of the family!) for sharing your princess with us all!
